Which Disability Benefits Do I Qualify For? A Quick Guide to Finding Out
There are over 40 disability benefits across federal and provincial governments. Most people don't know what they qualify for. Here's how to find out in 5 minutes.
Canada has dozens of disability benefits spread across federal, provincial, and territorial governments. The problem isn't a lack of programs — it's that nobody tells you what's available. Benefits don't come to you. You have to find them, apply for each one separately, and navigate different eligibility rules.
The Benefits Most People Miss
Based on the thousands of searches on our site, here are the benefits Canadians most commonly don't know about:
1. Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) — $200/month Launched in July 2025, the CDB provides $200/month to DTC-approved Canadians aged 18-64 with low income. Many people don't realize they qualify because they assume it's only for people who can't work at all. It's not — it's income-tested, not work-tested.
2. RDSP Bonds — $1,000/year with $0 contribution If you have a DTC and low income, the government deposits $1,000/year into your RDSP just for having the account open. No contributions required. Over time, this adds up to tens of thousands in free money.
3. Retroactive DTC Claims — Up to 10 years back If you've had a disability for years but only recently applied for the DTC, you can claim retroactive tax credits going back up to 10 years. This can result in a lump sum refund of $5,000-$25,000+.
4. Child Disability Benefit — $3,322/year Families with a DTC-approved child receive up to $3,322/year tax-free on top of the regular Canada Child Benefit. Many families don't realize this is a separate amount.
5. Provincial top-ups and programs Every province has its own disability benefits that stack on top of federal ones. For example: - Ontario: ODSP, SSAH, Passport Program - Alberta: AISH, FSCD, PDD - BC: PWD, At Home Program, CLBC - Quebec: Solidarity tax credit supplement, CLSC services
How to Check What You Qualify For
We built the Benefits Navigator specifically to solve this problem. Answer three questions — your province, your situation, and your needs — and get a personalized list of every benefit you may qualify for.

The navigator covers: - All federal disability benefits (DTC, CDB, RDSP, CPP-D, Child Disability Benefit) - Provincial income support programs - Provincial disability service programs - Tax credits and deductions - Housing and employment supports
The DTC Is the Key
Almost every major disability benefit in Canada requires the Disability Tax Credit as a prerequisite. If you haven't applied for the DTC, that should be your first step — before anything else.
The DTC unlocks: - Canada Disability Benefit ($200/month) - RDSP grants and bonds (up to $4,500/year) - Child Disability Benefit (up to $3,322/year for families) - Retroactive tax refunds - Provincial benefits that require DTC status
Common Situations
"I work full-time — do I still qualify?" Yes. The DTC is based on functional limitations, not employment status. Many people who work qualify for the DTC and the benefits it unlocks.
"My condition is intermittent (mental health, MS, chronic pain)" You may still qualify. The DTC considers conditions that are present "all or substantially all of the time" (90%+). Intermittent conditions like depression, MS flares, or chronic pain episodes can qualify if they substantially limit daily functioning at least 90% of the time.
"I'm a senior" Seniors qualify for many of the same benefits, plus additional ones like the CPP disability pension and GIS supplements. The DTC also unlocks the disability amount on your tax return, which can be significant.
"I'm a newcomer to Canada" You need to be a Canadian resident with a SIN to access most benefits. Once you have these, you qualify on the same basis as any other Canadian. Our newcomers guide has more details.
