Parent Support Programs

Parent support networks connect families with others who truly understand what they're going through. From condition-specific groups to dad-focused programs, these resources help caregivers feel less alone and more empowered.

Dad-Specific Support

Dads of children with disabilities are among the most underserved groups in the family support ecosystem. Almost all programs are implicitly designed for moms.

Couples & Relationship Support

  • The stress of caregiving significantly affects relationships. Couples counselling with a therapist who understands disability family dynamics can help.
  • Use respite hours for date nights — this is a legitimate and important use of respite.
  • Some family support agencies offer couples-focused workshops and retreats.
  • Family Support Institute of BC runs family retreats; some faith communities run marriage retreats for disability families.

Caregiver Burnout Warning Signs

Recognizing these signs is not a failure — it means too much is being carried alone. Contact a provincial respite program, talk to a doctor, or reach out to a support group.

  • Exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities that used to bring joy
  • Resentment toward the person being cared for (then guilt about the resentment)
  • Neglecting personal health — skipping doctor appointments, not eating well
  • Feeling like no one understands
  • Snapping at a partner or other children more than usual
  • Feeling trapped
  • Thinking "I can't do this anymore"
