Trauma Therapy (EMDR, CPP, TF-CBT)

Psychological & Mental HealthStrong Evidence

Specialized therapeutic approaches for processing traumatic experiences including medical trauma, abuse, and adverse experiences common in disability populations.

What Is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy encompasses specialized approaches for processing traumatic experiences. People with disabilities are at higher risk for trauma — from painful medical procedures, bullying, abuse, loss of function, and adverse childhood experiences.

Key approaches include Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) for children, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) for young children, and Somatic Experiencing. Each approach helps the brain process traumatic memories and reduce their ongoing impact.

Trauma-informed care recognizes that many challenging behaviours in people with disabilities may be trauma responses rather than disability symptoms. Addressing underlying trauma can lead to significant improvements in behaviour, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing.

Who Benefits from Trauma Therapy?

mental health

Directly treats PTSD, complex trauma, and trauma-related anxiety and depression. Specialized approaches exist for all ages and cognitive levels.

brain injury

Addresses psychological trauma from the injury event itself, adjustment to disability, and PTSD symptoms that can co-occur with cognitive effects of brain injury.

fasd

Many individuals with FASD have experienced adverse childhood experiences. Trauma therapy adapted for cognitive differences can address these layered impacts.

cerebral palsy

Addresses medical trauma from surgeries and procedures, bullying experiences, and the emotional impact of living with a physical disability.

What to Expect in a Session

First Session

A thorough trauma assessment (2-3 sessions) evaluates trauma history, current symptoms, safety, and readiness for trauma processing. Stabilization and safety are established before any trauma processing begins.

Ongoing Sessions

Sessions follow a phased approach: stabilization (building coping skills), trauma processing (working through traumatic memories using specific techniques), and integration (consolidating gains and building resilience).

Your Child's Role

The participant works through traumatic memories at their own pace with the therapist's guidance. Trauma processing can be emotionally intense but should always feel safe and manageable.

Caregiver's Role

For children, parent involvement is essential. Parents learn about trauma's impact, develop skills to support their child, and may process their own related trauma. In TF-CBT, parents attend parallel sessions.

Session length: 50-60 minutesFrequency: Weekly for 12-25 sessions; complex trauma may require longer treatment

When to Start

Early Childhood (0-5)

Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) can begin as early as age 0-5 for children who have experienced trauma. Early trauma treatment prevents long-term impacts.

School Age (6-17)

TF-CBT is the gold standard for school-age children and adolescents with PTSD symptoms. EMDR is also effective for older children.

Adults (18+)

Trauma therapy is effective at any age. Many adults with disabilities carry unresolved trauma from childhood medical experiences, bullying, or abuse.

General guidance: If your child is showing signs of trauma (nightmares, avoidance, hypervigilance, regression, emotional dysregulation), seek a trauma-informed assessment. Don't wait for symptoms to become severe.

Evidence & Research

Strong Evidence

Trauma therapies have strong evidence. TF-CBT and EMDR are recognized by the WHO and major medical organizations as first-line treatments for PTSD. Research supports their effectiveness for both children and adults, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities when approaches are appropriately modified.

Red Flags to Watch For

Be cautious of any provider who:

  • The therapist pushes you or your child to discuss traumatic experiences before trust and stability are established
  • Uses 'recovered memory' techniques or suggests memories that you don't recall
  • Is not specifically trained in evidence-based trauma therapies (TF-CBT, EMDR, CPP)
  • Dismisses ongoing distress as 'just part of having a disability' rather than recognizing potential trauma
  • Does not address current safety before beginning trauma processing work
